How to Save Money While Moving
Moving is a very daunting and stressful process and it becomes even more daunting and stressful when you are trying to move on a tight budget. Looking at your piles of boxes can be overwhelming especially when you have a very small budget to get them all to your new home. Take a deep breath and don’t stress! The first step in your move should be to sit down and create a moving budget. Having a set budget should help make some of your moving decisions a little easier.
Here are some tips and tricks for saving money while moving on a tight budget:
- Utilize free moving boxes
Don’t pay for moving boxes! Since you can’t move without boxes, sometimes they can be more expensive. This is waste of money while moving since you can get free boxes lots of places to pack your things in. Check online for places that have free boxes and also ask any friends or family who have recently moved if they have moving boxes left over. Printer paper boxes are very sturdy and can be found in many offices or workplaces. Liquor stores will also have piles of empty boxes in their storage rooms so this is also a good place to ask.
Take boxes from wherever you can get them but don’t forget make sure they’re in good condition so your belongings don’t fall out the bottom and will be safe during the move. You can also think about selling your boxes once your move is over to make a little cash!
- Research DIY moves and hiring professional movers
To save money during your move, you may think that doing everything yourself will be the cheapest and best option but this isn’t always the case so it’s important to do your research. Sometimes all the time and energy that goes into a DIY move is just not worth it.
A professional moving company can take a lot of stress out of your move. Do your research on the moving companies and get quotes from a few before choosing the one that will be helping you through your move – make sure the quote they give you includes everything and that there won’t be any hidden fees that pop up when you get your moving bill! If you are on the fence about hiring a professional moving company, weigh the pros and cons of a DIY move and make your final decision from there.
- Get rid of some stuff
Do you really need to bring everything you own to your new home? The answer is most likely no. Before you pack everything up and move, go through your stuff and sell or donate as much as you can! By selling some stuff you can make some money while also decreasing the amount of stuff you have to move. There are also some moving companies that partly use weight to estimate their costs so the less stuff you have, the less expensive your moving bill will be. Having less stuff will also make unpacking and moving into your new home less overwhelming – the less moving boxes you have to go through the better!
